Getting A Great Book Review - Part Two

I promised to be back this weekend with another list of places that offer to give you quality reviews.  I haven't checked all of them out myself, yet.  The list I have is enormous.  Lol.  And I'm beginning at the beginning.  If you missed last week's list, you can find it here:

Remember to read all the guidelines and requirements the reviewer posts on her site.  They work with a lot of authors, and it's hard when someone sends them a hard copy of their epic erotic fantasy along with a detailed synopsis with several testimonials.  The gracious reviewer then has to apologize and explain, as she blushes, that she only takes spiritual children's books in PDF format.  That might sound far-fetched, but in my experience with Highlighted Author, it's amazing some of the requests I get.  Lol.  Read the guidelines. ; ) Please.  And always thank them for considering your work.

On to the next 20 we go...

Getting A Great Book Review

Some say reviews do nothing to help your book, bring credit to your work.  I have to admit that when I read some of the reviews posted on Amazon, Goodreads, and other sites, sometimes I'm inclined to agree.  It's painfully obvious when family or friends that want to support their author and make them look fabulous post a review:  Five stars and a glowing paragraph of praise that does nothing to let the reader know what the book offered.

While these are wonderful for the author to see, in my opinion, the average person will look at it and have a "huh?" moment.  "Okay, the book's great.  Why?"

I like to post the credible reviews I receive on my website.  What I really like to use are reviews that give opinions on the characters, story line, writing style, and why they'd recommend it to others.  Tidbits about the story and characters are great.  These good reviews carry weight to sway readers to pick up our book and read for themselves.

I've compiled a list of sites that I'd like to share with you.  This is a simple list of good sites that review books; the name of the site, link, and what they consider.  Unless there's a single genre listed, you might want to go ahead and check it out to see if you can use them.  Many accept both fiction and non-fiction.

Keep in mind that sites that offer this service generally get bombarded with requests.  There might be a lengthy waiting line.  But we're in this writing career for the long haul, right?  So, don't get discouraged.  Accept the date they offer with a sincere thank you and put it on your calendar.  You'll still be promoting six months from now, even a year.  (Some work with you if it's a new release).

Since the list is a bit long, I'm cutting it into several posts.  I'll add part two next week, so drop back by.

Character Conference - A New Beginning - FFW

For Fantastic Friday Writers, we're to have a character chat with our characters.  I took the opportunity to call a little conference and fill them in on a new development in my writing schedule.

~ * ~

Charlene leads the gang into Shilo Manor’s kitchen and motions for them to sit around the breakfast nook’s table.

Charlene:  Break out the muffins, Elaina. We’re going to have a chat and we might as well enjoy it.

Elaina:  *eyes Charlene then heads for the pantry* Sure.

Linda:  They’re not there, little sister.  James has them stored up in the guest room at the end of my hall.

James: *turns red and pulls out a chair for Linda, leaning to her hearing* You didn’t have to announce that.

Linda:  Well, really.  She made so many we couldn’t move in here. *takes her seat*

Charlene:  Okay, we’ll do without the muffins.

Cole:  *lifts a bottle of liqueur*  We can all have a drink to relax.  *cocks a chair to the side and sits, stretching his long legs*

Vincent:  *leans against the baker’s island and folds arms*  You seem to know what this about if you brought a bottle.

Cole:  I have certain insights.  One of the perks of being the MC.

All gazes gravitate to him then fly to Charlene.  James lifts a hand and glasses caravan from the cupboard to park on the table.  Mianna sits in Cole’s lap.  Elaina walks to Vincent and he wraps his arms around her.  Linda slips her arm around James’s.

Linda:  What’s going on?

Charlene: *sighs and laces her fingers*  There’s someone I’d like you to meet.

The back door flies open and a teen girl enters.  She stuffs her hands in her jeans back pockets and drumsticks fall to the floor with a clatter as her fists take up too much room.  She grabs them and readjusts her stance, upping her brows.

Another girl bounces in behind her.  Her blonde curls bob around the big ribbon holding her ponytail.  She puffs a shiny smile and stuffs her pompoms to her back, standing at “cheerleader attention.”  All turn to look at them.

Vincent:  *eyes widen*  Teenagers?  You’re adding teenagers to the plot line?

James:  Charlene, no disrespect, but I’m just getting used to having five year olds around.

Cole:  They’re not joining us.

Charlene:  Cole. *sends him a warning glare*

Cole: *slugs a drink from the bottle*

Charlene:  Everyone, I’d like you to meet Tam.  She’s a junior at Sun Hill East High.  The only thing she loves more than basket ball is band.

Tam:  *lifts a drumstick filled hand and nods a smile*  Hey.  Nice to meet you.

Charlene:  And that is Sandy.  She’s lieutenant in their high school cheer squad.

Sandy:  *steps back, high bounds, then waves a pompom to the group*  Hi!  It’s great to meet you!  *steps back into her pose*

Mianna: *hops up, rushes to them, pulls them into a hug*  Oh, it’s so nice to meet you too.  It’s obvious you’re not from Cornerstone Deep.  By the look of your pompoms, I bet you’re from Cornerstone Summit.

Sandy:  *beams and nods enthusiastically*  Yeah.  Earth.  How did you know?

Mianna:  Charlene’s daughter is a cheerleader and she thinks about it a lot.

Vincent:  Really.  What’s going on?  Earth doesn’t come into the series until way down the line.  Book three is about me and Elaina’s…  You know.  On Midway Summit.

Charlene:  Well. *leans back*  With Cornerstone Deep Echoes waiting on the publisher to decide whether or not to publish it, I thought I’d hold off on book three for a bit.  Things might have to change if…

James:  Charlene, they won’t reject Echoes.  They can’t.  I mean…  *he looks at Linda*  It has our story in it.

Charlene:  *leans her head and wrinkles her brow*  Well, James, there’s always a chance.  And Tam’s story has been in the wings for a while.  I’d like to get started on my first young adult novella.

Tam:  *motions at him with an easy sway*  Hey, James.  You guys are always welcome over.  My… *she turns bright red*  friend is a shape shifter from one of the other dimensions.  You might like to meet him.

James:  *furrows his brow and looks at Charlene*   Midway Deep?

Vincent:  *shines a broad smile*  This could be interesting.  Midway Deep is the oddball dimension.

Cole:  *nods and takes another drink then cocks his head to whisper in Charlene’s ear*  You were right.  They just might accept this after all.

Charlene pulls him into a hug and looks around at her beloved characters.  She could never image any one of them fading from her heart.  You'll always be with me.  Leaning back into her chair, she closes her eyes.  A deep breath clears the anxiety of having this conversation.  A slow exhale focuses her mind on the present.  She opens her eyes to her computer screen.  Leaning over the keyboard, she starts typing.

Tam
Chapter One
Mr. Scum
Sandra blubbered into her pillow and I sighed louder than I needed to.  She raised her puffy eyes to peek at me.  I could hardly make out their hazel color with all the blood shot, water, and smeared mascara.  I don’t know how she could see anything.  And that mascara had to sting.  “Really, Sandy.  Get over it.  He’s just a guy, they’re not worth it.”

Charlene:  *smiles*  And so it begins.

Character Chat With Captain Derac Vidor - Cleanse Fire Released

Today I have the pleasure of announcing the release of one of my best friend's debut novel, Cleanse Fire.  It's book one in the Kinir Elite Chronicles.  Anastasia V. Pergakis is busy promoting but I love character chats and am more than happy to have the hero of the Chronicles, Captain Derac Vidor, over for a visit.

Derac, welcome! Come in, have a seat.
Hello Charlene. Thanks for having me.
I can't tell you how tickled I am to have you over. *blushes* Can I get you something to drink?
Oh, just water would be fine. Thank you.
*waves a hand and heads to the refrigerator*  I know I probably don't have anything like you do in Kinir...but water I can do.
*laughs* We have what you would call beer and fruit juices. I just don't care much for either. And I’m on duty, so, of course, no alcohol of any kind.
*hands him a glass*  Kinir is quite different than Earth.  *sits across from him* Tell me about it.
It's a small country compared to some on Earth. But, we have a rich history. Being elves and having such long lives, allows for our country to be successful, as those in power stay there longer. The country is rather flat, soft rolling hills of green grass and golden grain. In the spring the meadows bloom with hundreds of different flowers. *sigh* It's lovely.
It does sound lovely.  We have areas of rolling hills and grain...but, we have big cities that take over with their smog. Lol.
Kinir City is the largest city, and the capital. It is rather 'dirty' compared to some of the smaller villages, I suppose. But, it's still beautiful in its’ own way. Especially with the parliament building standing tall. Then, all the colors in the store fronts and the hustle and bustle of city live as the elves go about their lives.
Compared to Earth's advances in technology, ours are limited. Which also means cleaner air and cities, I suppose. We travel with horse and cart - or on foot.
I believe on Earth you have running water inside your homes and something called electricity? We don't have anything as special as that. Still use candles and oil lamps to light our way at night. And it takes a long time to heat up water for a bath, as we heat it up one pot at a time on our wood burning stoves. *smiles* But, I love it. I wouldn't do well on your Earth. Far too loud and dirty and cold for me.
Lol.  I'm afraid I wouldn't do well without our little conveniences.
*laughs* Yes, I'm sure. But I know of nothing else and while your devices do seem magical to me, I'll stick with what I know.
I noticed you mentioned the Parliament Building standing tall when you described Kinir City's beauty.  You do love your country.
Yes. I do. My father was a farmer and he worked the land with pride. He taught me to do the same. Digging in the dirt, watching things grow, then seeing it bring elves the things they need - that's magical.
Indeed, it is. *smiles*
But, I don't think I was ever cut out for the farming life. I wanted to get out, see the world, meet new creatures. The Army was my way to do that. *shrug* When I retire, I will go back to the farm and fulfill my duty to my family. But, for now, I'm happy to be where I am. Protecting my country - the land and the elves - from those that want to destroy it.
You're the leader of an elite team of elves. Tell me a bit about that.
*shrug* There isn't much to say beyond that, honestly. While I am Captain of the team, I don't hold myself to a higher standard than them. I train just as hard. I fight beside them and would die beside them, regardless of my rank.
With the position though, comes more responsibility, I suppose. I do have to make sure they stay in line - as they are prone to forget. *ahem* And, then of course, there are the debriefings, paperwork, and dealing with my superiors.
You're too modest, Derac.  I had a peek at your story.  A team of six specialized elves with very different personalities spending practically all your time together? They need a good leader.
Yes. That is why I say that I don't hold myself higher to them. They are my family in a sense. And yes, every team needs a leader. But, I think there are many more out there better at it than I am. I look at my rank as more of....the big brother. I look out for my team, I feel responsible for them. But I'm not "separated" from them. Does that make sense?
*leans head with a smile*  Yes. It does. Tell me... How did you come to Anastasia and get her to write your story?
I observed from a far for a long while before talking to her. She was involved with another book at the time and I didn't want to interrupt that. So, I watched and waited and learned. She has a deep sense of patriotism for her country and that called to me. Her father, you see, served in the Army. And she feels this overwhelming pride and love in him. *smile* That's when I knew she was the perfect author to tell my story. She would understand my own loyalty. *shrug* She understands me.
Awww.  That's wonderful. And now your story is published!  How does it feel?
It's almost the same as getting a medal, I suppose. I feel pride in what we created. And I'm eagerly awaiting what people think. Yet, at the same time, the connection that Anastasia and I have from this experience is worth more to me than people reading the book.
You're so gallant. *winks*  I know she's sniffling as she reads this. Lol
*chuckles* Yes. I'm sure she is.
So, fill us in on Cleanse Fire.  Would you give us some highlights?
In Cleanse Fire, we discover a traitor in the chain of command. So this leads us to abandon our normal missions to protect the citizens, as we hunt down the one who betrayed us.
The mission goes awry, however, when we discover that he was not the only player in the conspiracy. We have to deal with a powerful wizard intent on killing on us. Attacked on two fronts - our allies growing thin - we fight back as hard as we can and bring to justice those that plotted against us.
And I know you will not be satisfied, Charlene, if I don't mention that a little romance happens in the book as well. *wink*
You read my mind! My next question was... *crosses legs and leans in close*  What's this little love that blooms between you and Kie?
*small smile*
Oh, no. That is not all you’re giving me.
*bigger smile*
*flashes huge smile and ups brows*
What do you want me to say? She snuck in and caught me unaware. I had no intention of falling in love again - with anyone. Ever. But it just *shrug* happened. I can't explain it.
Well, I'm thrilled she stole your heart.
*laughs* I am too.
Well, Derac, I promised Anastasia I wouldn't keep you here too long.  I know she has a lot of plans to keep you busy with promoting
Yes, she does. But, it's fun. I've enjoyed it so far. We also have book two to write.
That's right.  What's it called again?
Right now it's titled Fire Renewed. But, I'm not sure if Anastasia will keep that or not. The story is coming out a little differently than she thought. A little miscommunication on my part.
Lol.  Well, I look forward to it.  So, keep the communication going. Thank you so much for coming all the way to Arkansas to visit with me.
It was my pleasure, Charlene. I enjoyed it. We'll have to do it again when the next book comes out, yes?
*takes a deep breath and tries not to squeal* Oh, definately.
*charming smile. kisses Charlene's hand* Until then.

World Building With Holidays - FFW

For today's Fantastic Friday Writers blog hop, we're to share with you what kind of holidays our characters celebrate in their worlds, or how we come up with the holidays they celebrate.  I had to think about this one because, well, I haven't given my characters any to celebrate yet.  I hope this doesn't mean my worlds aren't three dimensional.  But, to be honest, the story takes place in a few week period and nobody had a chance to think about celebrating a holiday much less plan a party.  The plot moves pretty fast, and their focus was on saving Anna, undoing the damage that was done.

Well, I guess giving my characters something to claim as a holiday did come about in book two of the Chronicles of Shilo Manor series, Cornerstone Deep Echoes.  An event happens that will be celebrated for centuries to come.  It isn't named yet, but it will be in celebration of the God of Conformance's return to pass judgment and support the Sentinel's stand against the Nobleman who breached the convanents made with the gods.

Every faithful follower of Arylin, Goddess of Love, Taravaughn, God of Life, and Griffin, God of Conformence, converged on Shilo City Park to see the great granite gargoyle's empty perch...and witness the showdown between Cole, the head of the Sentinels, and Lord Dressen, Grand Marshal of the Courts.  What follows will be branded in the minds and hearts of those present, as well as the history books.

I wondered, when I saw this topic, what other holidays I might add to round out my worlds.  So, I took to the internet and did a little surfing.  Here's what I found we claim as worthy reasons to celebrate.  By the time I read to the end of this list...I was hungry. Lol.

See what you think...  I couldn't help myself and added a couple comments to the side in blue. *wink*
